Welcome to your weekly update on all things Ballan Brumbies Basketball Club.

FROM THE PRESIDENT.

Welcome to another edition of Hoop Prints and Hoops – your weekly wrap-up of all things Ballan Basketball!

It was a shorter week on the court, with fewer games played due to the long weekend and the Ballarat Junior Tournament. A big congratulations to all our players who competed, we hope you had a fantastic time going up against strong teams from both local and interstate.

This week also marked the launch of our Sunday Scrimmage sessions in partnership with Performance Basketball Ballan. These sessions bring together players from U16s right through to our senior squads for a relaxed and fun-filled hit-out. With eight players showing up, there was plenty of laughter and some great moments shared between juniors and seniors alike. These scrimmages will continue each weekend, so if you’re eligible and keen, come along — it’s a great way to connect with other members of the club, both young and seasoned!

As school holidays approach and the chill of winter sets in, Basketball Ballarat has shared some upcoming camps and trials (details below). And don’t forget — our Ballan Brumbies hoodies, jackets, and merch are perfect for keeping warm and showing off your club pride. They’re practical and they look great too!

Until next week — #GoBrumbies

REMINDERS

FIRST AID COURSE - New Date & Open to the Community

Due to low initial numbers, the First Aid Course has been rescheduled to Sunday, 27th July 2025. To make the most of this valuable opportunity, we’re now opening it up to other local sports clubs and the wider Ballan community. We believe it’s important that our coaches — and anyone working with our players — have basic first aid knowledge.

This course is also open to parents, guardians, and family members who wish to attend.

The Brumbies Committee has organised this course to support our club’s commitment to safety, and we’ll be subsidising the cost for all coaches under 18 years of age.

When: 27th of July 2025

Time: 9:30 to 12:30

Where: Basketball Gym, Ballan Primary School

What: General first aid along with CPR certification

COACHES CORNER

WANT TO BECOME A BETTER SHOOTER?

FORM SHOOTING

This drill will improve shooting form and develop good shooting habits so once players get in a game, they will consistently use proper form without thinking about it. This simple drill is critical for youth player and can greatly improve shooting percentages for all types of players. All youth coaches should run this drill almost daily.

  1. Stand about 2 feet from the basket. (Yes, it's only two feet. Do not stand farther back!)

  2. For right handed shooters, your right foot should be centered with the basket and pointing directly towards the middle of the basket.

  3. Your left foot should be positioned shoulder width apart in a comfortable position. Most players leave their left foot slightly behind the other foot. The left foot should be pointing in the relative area of the basket but probably should not be pointing directly at it. Most players feel the most comfortable with their left foot pointing just to the left of the basket.

  4. Bend your knees, at a comfortable angle somewhere around 45 degrees. Now if you're feet are aligned properly, the rest of your body should follow suit.

  5. Hold the ball in your hand, palm facing up. Your non-shooting hand can dangle to the side.

  6. Slowly bring the ball in and hold is as if you were shooting with one hand. Your arm should form a 90 degree angle. Your tricep should be parallel with the floor and directly above your right leg.

  7. Your wrist should be bent with fingers spread out. The ball should be sitting on your finger pads, NOT your finger tips. Your index finger should be in the center of the ball.

  8. Pause. This is when you make sure your arm, feet, and everything is in the correct form.

  9. Look at the the rim and proceed to shoot with one hand, leaving your off hand to the side. The player should use his legs on every shot. At the end of the shot, the player should be up on his toes. This is very important, because players generate most of their strength from their legs to shoot the ball to the basket.

Hold your follow through. "It's like reaching into a cookie jar."

Grab the ball and repeat the process. Get the ball quickly but don't hurry your shot! Take your time.

Each player should get a minimum of 20 repetitions, but 50 or 100 would be better.

See how Steph Curry uses this drill in his warm up and practice to build to 100 makes.
