Welcome to your weekly update on all things Ballan Brumbies Basketball Club.

FROM THE PRESIDENT.

Welcome to another edition of Hoop Prints and Hoops – your weekly wrap-up of all things Ballan Basketball!

Another week and another round done. Plenty of great scores and efforts across the board as we edge closer to a well-earned break — well, from basketball at least.

I feel I may have jinxed us with my previous comments last week about our success so far! This week saw some tough games, with a few teams falling just short of the win. But that’s basketball and the lessons we learn from losses often outweigh the lessons we learn from victories. I’m sure our coaches are already thinking ahead and planning for a strong second half of the season.

Special shoutouts this week to:

  • U12.2 Boys (Coach Phoenix Dart) – a huge win!

  • U16.3 Boys (Coach Joe Karimi) – fantastic effort and result!

  • U16.1 Girls (Coach Amy O’Brien) – hot on the heels of the top team!

  • U19.2 Boys (Coach Riley Dary) – holding strong in 1st place!

Amazing work from all teams and coaches — keep it up!

As you may have seen, our AGM is scheduled for the end of July. We’re aiming for a smooth transition into the new year with fresh energy on the committee. If any parents would like to contribute, share ideas, or just get a sense of what’s ahead, we’d love to see you there.

We're also still looking for volunteers to help clean the courts on Friday nights. If you can spare 30 minutes for a sweep or mop, please reach out — every little bit helps.

Sunday Scrimmages are still going strong!

Each week brings a new mix of players, and the energy on court has been fantastic. This past Sunday saw a fun clash between the old boys — members of our senior men's squads — and a group of the junior players keen to prove themselves.

Over five hard-fought games, the young guns edged out a 3–2 series win. As for the old boys? Let’s just say the post-game MVPs were Advil, Nurofen, and a well-earned sit-down.

Great fun all around, and these sessions will continue through the holidays should you or your child wish to attend. Scan the QR code to be added to the WhatsApp group to stay up to date with it all.

Good luck to everyone for the last game before the break, and as always…

REMINDERS

FIRST AID COURSE - New Date & Open to the Community

Due to low initial numbers, the First Aid Course has been rescheduled to Sunday, 27th July 2025. To make the most of this valuable opportunity, we’re now opening it up to other local sports clubs and the wider Ballan community. We believe it’s important that our coaches — and anyone working with our players — have basic first aid knowledge.

This course is also open to parents, guardians, and family members who wish to attend.

The Brumbies Committee has organised this course to support our club’s commitment to safety, and we’ll be subsidising the cost for all coaches under 18 years of age.

When: 27th of July 2025

Time: 9:30 to 12:30

Where: Basketball Gym, Ballan Primary School

What: General first aid along with CPR certification

COACHES CORNER

QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS WITH A BALLAN BRUMBIES COACH.

COACH:  Joe Sekata

TEAM: BOYS U12.1

BASKETBALL BACKGROUND:

Played as part of the original teams when Ballan Brumbies first started back in 2017. Have won 2 championships, both at U16's. My most memorable moment was having a last second play drawn up by my coach, Jason Hendrick, which wasnt intended for me but I saw my opportunity. As coach yelled "NOOOOO JOOOEEE" I scored the shot and we won the game!

FAVORITE BASKETBALL TEAM:

Boston Celtics - always!

FAVORITE BASKETBALL PLAYER:

Old School players, can't go past Larry Bird (33).

New School, Jayson Tatum (0).

FAVORITE DRILL:

Cone Box Passing Drill - check out this weeks Coaches Corner to see how its done.

BASKETBALL PHILOSOPHY:

Teamwork makes the dream work!

DRILL OF THE WEEK

CONE BOX PASSING DRILL.

SET UP: Set up a box by spacing cones 15 feet apart. Place a defender inside the box. There are three offensive players outside the box at a cone with one cone left vacant.

HOW TO PLAY: Offensive players are positioned one pass away from the initial ball handler. There are no passes allowed into or through the box, so on the first pass, the player not receiving the ball sprints to the open cone. Offensive players learn to move the ball quickly, ball fake, pass in either direction and move to get open. After everyone has a chance to play defense, add a second defender with one defender always on the ball to step up the intensity and practice spacing.

  1. The defender is not allowed to step outside the box but his or her hands can reach out to deflect or steal the pass.

  2. On a left-to-right pass outside the box, the offensive player not involved moves to the open cone.

  3. On a quick pass back, the player near the baseline relocates to the open cone again
