Welcome to your weekly update on all things Ballan Brumbies Basketball Club.
FROM THE PRESIDENT.
Welcome to another edition of Hoop Prints and Hoops – your weekly wrap-up of all things Ballan Basketball!
With the recent issues at Selkirk Stadium, it’s been a relief that few, if any, of our games have been cancelled, and it's great to see a return to our regular playing schedule. Now that games have resumed, it's fantastic to see our teams back on court. I’ve been really impressed with the performance across all teams this season. There have been some fantastic results, with many teams maintaining strong form and notching up well-earned wins. As we reach the midpoint of the season, those teams pushing for finals positions need to stay focused, continuing their hard work at training and maintaining strong teamwork on game day will be key to reaching the final four.
A huge shoutout goes to our dedicated volunteer coaches, who are doing an outstanding job this season. We wouldn’t have teams without your commitment and effort. The more we continue to build on this great work, the stronger we become as a club.
I’d especially like to highlight Coach Steve Cassar and his U8s, who recently smashed their previous game-high score of 18 by putting up 25 points in their latest game! From early games with just 1s and 2s on the scoreboard (including a scoreless Round 2), the development from training to game day has been remarkable. Well done to Coach Steve and the boys!
We also had the second of three highly anticipated matchups between our Senior Men's Blue and White teams this season. If you remember, Men's White took out Game 1 with a thrilling one-point win but Game 2 was a very different story with Men's Blue securing a dominant 36-point victory, leveling the now-celebrated “Ballan Men’s Derby” at one game apiece. With the decider just seven weeks away, we're all looking forward to seeing how this clash of the titans plays out!
Lastly, our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is coming up at the end of July. We warmly invite all parents and community members to attend. Whether you’re interested in hearing about the club’s direction for the next 12 months or have something you'd like to raise, your input is always welcome.
We’re also encouraging any parents who are keen to get involved with the committee to come along. Joining the committee doesn’t mean taking on a major role, unless you want to, but it’s a great way to contribute and help shape the future of the club.
We’ll confirm the AGM date in the coming weeks, so please keep an eye out for that announcement.
Looking forward to another exciting week of Ballan Basketball.#GoBrumbies

FIRST AID COURSE - New Date & Open to the Community

Due to low initial numbers, the First Aid Course has been rescheduled to Sunday, 27th July 2025. To make the most of this valuable opportunity, we’re now opening it up to other local sports clubs and the wider Ballan community. We believe it’s important that our coaches — and anyone working with our players — have basic first aid knowledge.
This course is also open to parents, guardians, and family members who wish to attend.
The Brumbies Committee has organised this course to support our club’s commitment to safety, and we’ll be subsidising the cost for all coaches under 18 years of age.
When: 27th of July 2025
Time: 9:30 to 12:30
Where: Basketball Gym, Ballan Primary School
What: General first aid along with CPR certification

COACHES CORNER
QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS WITH A BALLAN BRUMBIES COACH.

COACH: Max Besant
TEAM: BOYS U12.3
BASKETBALL BACKGROUND:
I started playing basketball in 2022 as my mates played and asked me to join. Last year I became a coach with an U10's team and was proud to take the team to the finals and win it.I want to see where basketball can take me in life. I love it.
FAVORITE BASKETBALL TEAM:
Dallas Mavericks - But I wish Luka was still with us.
FAVORITE BASKETBALL PLAYER:

Luka Doncic - now LA Laker
FAVORITE DRILL:
Scrimmages. It gives you a chance to work on skills that you have learnt in a game situation. Drills are great for the fundementals but scrimmages help you to understand what you practice and develop it into how you play.
BASKETBALL PHILOSOPHY:
Don't Stress and Dont overthink what you are doing, just play.
(My coach would say I should listen to my own advise too...)
DRILL OF THE WEEK
LAYUP ON THE MOVE WITHOUT DRIBBLING.
Sometimes in a game, we focus so much on dribbling that we forget: not every move needs a bounce! Dribbling is an important part of the game—but often, the quickest and most effective way to score at the basket is without using a dribble. Yes, WITHOUT!
This simple yet effective drill is designed to improve your footwork, timing, and finishing around the rim. All you need is a partner, whether it's a friend, coach, or even Mum or Dad.
How to Set Up the Drill:
Start at the free-throw line extended, or a few steps behind it. Just make sure you're not too close or too far from the basket.
You can start with a couple of dribbles or from a standing position.
Pass the ball to your partner and immediately make a hard cut toward the basket.
As you receive the ball back, take two steps and finish the layup without dribbling.

Footwork Tips for Beginners:
On the right side of the hoop: as you catch the pass, step with your left foot first, then right foot, and finish with your right hand.
On the left side: step with your right foot first, then left foot, and aim to finish with your left hand.
This drill helps you:
Develop better layup posture and footwork
Improve your ability to catch the ball on the move
Learn how to score quickly and efficiently without relying on a dribble
Drill Goal:
Make 10 successful layups on each side using correct form
Keep going until you hit 10 makes, then switch sides
Stay focused on your form, go at game speed, and have fun becoming a better finisher!
