Semi final weekend in the Ballarat Basketball Association saw Ballan Brumbies have a remarkable 11 of their 15 eligible sides in finals action.
The U16 girls came into their game as a major underdog as the 4th place qualifier, playing top of the table Drummo Dragons.
The game started slowly, both sides coming out in tight 2-3 zones that suffocated the key, neither offense able to find an inch of space. After a tense opening, Piper Bogers opened the scoring for Drummo before a quick response from Chloe Siemensma for Ballan coming from a sharp Millie Czyzewski pass.
Drummo made a concerted effort to keep Ballan's leading scorer Carly McCausland out of the contest. That meant other Brumbies had to get into the action. McCausland's movement started to bend the Dragons defense, allowing the Brumbies driving lanes and getting the girls to the free throw line, where Adelaide Ross' accuracy kept the scoreboard ticking over for Ballan.
A late Sophie Wilkins basket saw Drummo tie the game at eight points apiece at half time.
Drummo started the 2nd half strongly, Bogers and Imogen Harricks scoring quick baskets. Ballan, though, responded through a McCausland basket and more free throws, this time by Ross and Stella McLeod.
As the game entered it's final 10 minutes. Ballan's defense remained tight. McCausland, McLeod and Helena Rayner getting their hands on so many of the fast inside passes that Drummo usually thrive upon. Drummo, by contrast, were starting to lose their defensive discipline.
A Violet Gray three pointer saw Drummo's shape crumble as they started to push out aggressively. That, in turn, provided the space for McCausland and Ross to get the the basket on the drive and for Rayner's clever cutting.
Once Ballan got on a roll, they were unstoppable. The Brumbies reeled off seven points in a 90 second span, breaking the game open. McCausland hit a driving layup and a tough put back before Rayner connected on a short jump shot.
Drummo pushed hard to get back into the game, but Ballan's defense held fast, the girls winning through to next week's Grand Final in an upset 21-14 victory.
The girls are one of five Ballan junior sides that will line up in next weeks grand finals.
